B&B Allo Zefiro is housed in a completely renovated historical building in the old town of Monopoli on Piazza Palmieri. The heritage protection authorities of Apulia has recently carried out some excavations which show the existence of an ancient village already in the Prehistoric period (XVI). “A strett du vind” (local dialect) is a quiet alley a few steps from the sea and in the heart of nightlife. It is surrounded by traditional restaurants, trattorias on-the-sea and patron saint’s festivals… to let you deeply feel the brightness of Apulia!
This ancient Apulian town was repopulated during the Middle Ages by the inhabitants of Egnathia. The archaeological site of Egnathia is one of the most interesting in Apulia and perfectly integrated in the naturalistic environmental context. Monopoli was of great importance in the ancient world for its geographical position so much to be mentioned by authors such as Pliny and Horace. It was also an active center of trade and commerce thanks to the presence of the port and the “via Traiana” which is still visible.
In 1456 the area was occupied by the Venetians and their signs are evident on Palazzo Martinelli. The Venetians promised they would have treated the population kindly so that citizens swore allegiance to the Republic of San Marco. A Love, the One between Venetians and the people of Monopoli, which has lasted for several decades!
